Community Rallies To Rescue Horse Trapped In Culvert

Today's good news story comes from Grand Junction, Colorado.

In a heartwarming display of neighborly support, a horse named Hank was successfully rescued from a culvert thanks to the collaborative efforts of local fire departments, neighbors, and a nearby business.

The incident began early on November 27, when Hank’s owner, Dave Boudreaux, learned that his horse had become trapped. His wife discovered Hank and immediately called for help. What followed was a remarkable collaboration of neighbors, local agencies, and even nearby businesses.

Fire crews from the Grand Junction Fire Department (GJFD) and the Lower Valley Fire District were among the first to respond. Despite their expertise, they realized the rescue would require additional equipment. That’s when the community stepped in.

One nearby business, Legacy Sign and Neon, played a critical role in the rescue. The company provided a crane that became instrumental in lifting Hank out of the culvert.

“The Fire Department was already there and had a web strap around the horse,” explained Mike Blackwelder, Sales Manager for Legacy Sign and Neon. “We were able to set up our crane, hook up to the horse, and start lifting him out.”

To ensure Hank’s safety during the operation, a veterinarian from Fruita arrived to sedate the horse, keeping him calm as the rescue unfolded.

Thanks to this incredible effort, Hank was lifted safely from the culvert. The veterinarian confirmed that the horse was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

For Boudreaux, the experience was overwhelming in the best way.

“I’ve never had kids of my own, so my horses, my dogs, my cats—they’re my kids. It’s so heartfelt for me, for what everybody’s done to save our horse,” he told KKCO 11 News.

Both the firefighters and those involved with Legacy Sign and Neon emphasized that helping animals is second nature for them. “I think anybody with the heart is officially in the business to help animals anytime they can,” said Blackwelder.

As Hank recovers, Boudreaux remains deeply grateful for everyone who helped.

“Thank you to all our neighbors, our friends, the fire department, our vet. Thank you all for saving Hank. That means a lot.”
